3 legged replacement magneto or work around?

Postby Arkie » Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:15 am

Briggs 3.5 hp Horiz shaft
81302
943541
6010180 (might be a 1960 year?)

Anyone experimented with a work around magneto ignition system for this old Briggs engine??

This motor has a Briggs 291617 magneto (termed 2 magnet 3 legged magneto) It mounts with 4 screws and has the air vane type governor bracket mounted on side of magneto with two of the 4 screws.

Anyone know of a work around replacement magneto?

Anyone got any idea if this 2 legged version will produce a spark with correct timing if mounted? (listed as replacing a 291617 but is only 2 legged)

Here is a picture of what mine looks like on fleece bay.

I have some 3.5 hp vertical engine flywheels and ignitions, points type. (none have the 3 legged magneto but;
Was wondering if one of these type flywheels could be used on the Horiz crank engine and a standard type 2 legged magneto????????

IIRC the newer two legged style will not work, the mounting standoffs won't line up.

Well there is a replacement coil core that uses the current laminate core. Expensive but your are repairing an antique engine. Scroll down the page.

Ran a leak down test on the old engine and indicates it' also has weak rings, so whipping on a dying horse.

Will salvage for the 2 piece flo-jet carb and engine mounted gas tank.

Thanks for the info about replacement Magneto.

Appears fleece bay has a listing mistake on their 2 legged mag as a replacement for the 3 legged 291617. (no surprise)

That like an Xtreme PTO clutch on Amazon being described as a Tygon Fuel line.
