Yep very well could be- Exhaust valve leaking can cause lean running condition due to exhaust gasses being pulled back into combustion chamber. As I recall on those L-Heads, valve spec was .005 - .007 intake and .009 - .011 exhaust.

Just a follow up here. I did adjust the valves. Intake at .006 and exhaust at .010. The engine runs fine, and most importantly...stays running.

I would not have thought poor valve adjustment (although I think this was pretty far off) could have had such a bad effect.
