I took apart the recoil. Cleaned the housing pulley and spring. Pulley has about 16th of a inch wobble to it. Spring was really dirty. Also found that when I cut the rope it didnt retract around the pulley like the others I replaced.

sounds to me like it's your starter that's causing it. have you finished rebuilding it yet, and did the problem go away?

I after cleaning it and putting new rope in it still does it but not as bad as before. Gonna replace the recoil spring and pulley if that doesnt work then Im buying whole new starter assy.

Starter pawls and clip are new. Replaced them back in July thinking that would fix it.

Dave,

I finished up on a Stihl MS290 the other day. Had a worn out pawl and cracked fuel line. There is only one pawl in this saw, despite having two holes for two pawls. I put replacement in the hole it came out of, works fine now after also replacing fuel line. :D Is pawl set-up correct?

No change when using one or two pawls. So I just left 2 pawls on it.

Recoil issue fixed. Didnt have the the rope wound tight enough around the starter pulley.
