what are those oval things?

what are those oval things to the left of the questions? some are scrolling lines, some lines are not scrolling, some have a star? TOM.

The round things tell you about the thread. If they are blue it means you have read all of the posts if they are red there are unread posts. Scrolling means more than one page. If it has a star in it you posted to the thread.
