Need help with Briggs 3HP with worn out exhaust valve guide

Postby creia » Fri Mar 14, 2025 2:10 pm

1986 Briggs 3Hp Model 80202, horizontal shaft "Koolbore"
The exhaust valve guide to valve stem clearance is worn out and way out of specs (excessive valve wiggle) :( . Other than that I have VERY nice block (including the bore) :D and I would really like to use this for one of my restorations.
This engine does not have a (replaceable) pressed in valve guides. The valve guides (holes) are bored into the aluminum block from the factory. :o As per the Briggs manual, the correction is reaming the valve guide/hole, pressing in a new brass valve guide, and then finish reaming the brass bushing to size, all using special Briggs tools.(See list below)
Does anybody have any of these tools (or a kit with all) they would like to sell? I'm thinking of trying this myself if I can get the proper tools at a decent/reasonable price, otherwise I will be trying to find a small engine machine shop to do it.
19064 - Counter bore reamer
19191 Pilot bushing
19065 Valve guide bushing driver
19066 Valve guide bushing finish reamer
Thanks for any help!
Michael :)

I'll try to remember to dig around my old tool boxes and see if maybe I still have mine. I haven't done valve guides in years, but I did at one point have the full set of valve guide tools for Briggs (and Tecumseh too!)

Follow up question:
When installing new valve guides is it always necessary to recut the valve seats? :? If that is the case (and I repeat "IF"), I don't have those tools either and in that case I would probably be better off leaving it to a pro/machine shop.

Would the reamer sizes help? That way you only need the cone and a rod to bushings in. The only problem is the initial reamer had a pilot tip and replacements from McMaster don't have a pilot tip.

I even got an oversize reamer that I had to use for the after market bushings when they were available. But you would need a second cone that is modified for the larger reamer.

Not necessary if you got things nicely squared (I actually modified my first guide cone by reaming it out with the piloted reamer and installing a guide bushing in the cone, so to get more precision from the finish reamer)

Also, I do have the set (most of it, I lost track of the puller bolt, nut and washer for pulling old guides, but still have the tap, driver, pilot reamer and finish reamer as well as cone) Add $10 shipping and make an offer I can pack em up in a flat rate box for ya.

HOWEVER! - You may also want to make sure you can get replacement guide bushings (and maybe an extra cone that you can modify for better precision as I had done, I lost my precision cone...) Or you may just want to have bushings put in by a machine shop and seats recut at the same time (I believe valve seat cutter kits and valve refacers are still available out there somewhere They'd be used in ATV and engine building shops too.. but you're probably looking at a minimum of $600 or so for a basic seat cutter kit, if not more by now. I paid like $495 back in 2011... sold it away long ago though.. otherwise I'd offer it up to you extremely cheap, knowing it would be well loved and well used... )

UPDATE:
The block is SHOT! :(
I had high hopes for this engine when I saw the condition of the bore (no scoring, hardly worn, and some original cross hatching still visible) :)
That feeling changed this morning, however, when I disassembled the engine and inspected the internals.
The mag side bore for the crank through the block is extremely scored (the worst I've ever seen in 20 years) :o
The sidecover bore for the crank is almost as bad. :o
The mag side crank journal is also badly scored. :o
I am now looking for another good 3HP block
The damage must have been from lack of maintenance resulting in very dirty oil. I do thank everyone that replied and tried to help... ;)

Ah well, can't win them all. And by the way, offer's still up there if you still want those old briggs tools (or any others I may have) I no longer even use them so they are just laying around gathering dust and in the way, so I'd be happy to let them go cheaply to someone that I'm sure can appreciate and actually use them... Just FYI... PM me if you ever think you need some special service tools I might have laying around...
