Honda GJAAA (GCV190)

Engine: Honda GJAAA 1061009

Mower: Honda Model HRB2 17TDA DE
serial MAEA 1037217

Neighbor Lady had not used this mower for several years. While the oil was draining (oil? I meant to say black tar) I sharpened the twin blades on this Honda Harmony. There wasn't a ton of oil in the drain pan when I was done, either. The gas tank had been run dry. (or it all evaporated)

Fresh blades, Fresh oil, Fresh gas, starts on 2nd or 3rd pull.

When running at full throttle, it sounds fine. But if you back off the throttle, the engine has what sounds to me like a mechanical knock. No shaking or excess vibration. But that knock...not normal.

Once warm, it starts nice on first pull.

This set of blades had no suspicious dings or chunks missing. But I think I will pull the flywheel tonight and take a look to see if the key has be partly sheered.

Any other ideas on that knocking?

Would there be a website that might give me a clue as to the age of this mower?

Thanks much.

If the flywheel was loose and the key damaged the engine would be hard to start and would likely kick back. Is the blade bolt properly torqued?

As Roy alluded to, don't waste your time with the flywheel. i'd be looking at the blade adapter/hub and or drive pulley setup.

Check valve clearances, maybe?

Yeah I think you guys are right on the flywheel key. It starts easy, and no ripping of rope out of my hand. The symptoms are just not there.

I took a quick look at the blades. And will check again tonight.

I will keep you posted.
